So you are trying to grow your business, but you don’t want to get out and meet people and you are wondering why your business isn’t growing? Hmm… let’s see, GET OUT AND MEET PEOPLE! You cannot sit home all day and expect business to pour in just because you will it so. You have to get out and meet people!
Are you shy? I can totally relate. I know that familiar feeling of being in a room full of strangers that seem to have known each other for years. Who do I talk to? What do I say? Will I be interesting and engaging? These are things you might wonder. So what do you do? Stay by the bar, sip your drink and hope someone comes up to you so you don’t have to make that bold first move?
This is a very common feeling. Most people don’t like to network. They feel its phony and a waste of time because everyone is pushing their own agendas. Well, let’s take a look at the definition of “networking” shall we?
Networking- The exchange of information or services among individuals, groups, or institutions.
So, if you think everyone has an agenda when networking…you’d be right! The agenda is to meet people you can exchange information with in hopes of establishing/growing your business and other professional endeavors. That is the point of it all! However, networking does not have to be phony. Of course you’ll run across that person who wants to thrusts their business card in your face and tell you how great his/her business is without taking the time to see if it’s a product or service you truly need. Don’t do this!
Instead, here are some tips to help get comfortable with networking:
1. Be honest and genuine. Truly develop an interest in the person you are speaking with. Ask questions and be sure to actively listen.
2. Join organizations that support your interests and business goals. It makes sense to network at events that can perpetuate your business goals.
3. Establish yourself as a resource for others. Put energy into connecting people with other people. Establish yourself as “go-to” person.
4. Be knowledgeable in your field. Whatever it is you are good at become and expert and an authority. People like doing business with people who are learned, knowledgeable and accomplished.
5. Be confident. Know that you have something to contribute to any discussion. Don’t be afraid to shine. People will flock to you!
6. Quickly follow up with the people you connect with. Send an email, Facebook or Twitter request as soon as you can so you can stay connected. Remember, a contact that you never use is no benefit at all.
Happy networking!
